Capital invested in seed stage companies rose by 23% in the third quarter of this year. Seed stage companies raised $214 million and accounted for 54% of the total deal volume. Companies receiving capital for the first time from venture capitalists also saw a 7% increase to $2.5 billion in the third quarter.

Total venture capital raised so far this year is $47.2 billion and is higher than the full year totals for 17 of the last 20 years.

The third quarter also saw a diversity in the industries for venture capitalist investments. Although the software industry still continues to receive the highest amounts of capital investments, capital was raised for a variety of other industries including biotechnology, media and entertainment, retailing/distribution, computers and peripherals, healthcare services, semiconductors and Internet specific companies.
